Allergy Drops in Palm Springs, CA

Allergy Drops Treatment in Palm Springs, CA

A Convenient and Needle-Free Allergy Care Option for Select Patients

More than 50 million Americans suffer from allergies. Common symptoms include nasal congestion, breathing difficulties, frequent sneezing, itchy and watery eyes, and sinus pain and pressure. While medications can offer quick relief, the results are often temporary. They don’t address how the immune system responds to allergens.

Here at Palm Springs Breathe Free Sinus and Allergy Centers, we offer allergy drops, also known as sublingual immunotherapy (SLIT). It’s a convenient and needle-free treatment option that may help reduce the body’s sensitivity to allergens over time, in appropriate patients.

Learn More About Allergy Drops

What Are Allergy Drops?

Allergy drops, also known as sublingual immunotherapy or SLIT, use small amounts of the patient’s allergen extract placed under the tongue every day. Allergy drops are used off-label in some cases to expose the immune system to small amounts of allergens over time. While some patients report symptom improvement, these uses are not FDA-approved, and effectiveness has not been established.

⚠️Important notes on allergy drops and FDA-approval

  • SLIT tablets are FDA-approved for certain allergens such as grass, ragweed, and dust mites.
  • Custom-compound allergy drops (SLIT solutions) are not FDA-approved in the United States, and their use is considered off-label. Off-label use has not been evaluated by the FDA for safety or efficacy. Your provider must thoroughly discuss potential risks, benefits, and alternatives before initiating treatment.
  • Not all allergy patients are appropriate candidates for SLIT. A consultation with your healthcare provider can help determine your eligibility for the treatment based on your clinical findings, symptoms, medical history, and personal health goals.

While allergy drops offer many patients convenience, allergy shots use FDA-regulated allergen extracts and remain a commonly used form of immunotherapy for many environmental allergens.

What Are the Potential Benefits of Allergy Drops?

  • At-home convenience, which means no weekly visits to the doctor’s office, though an initial in-office dose and regular medical monitoring are essential
  • Needle-free alternative to allergy shots, which some patients may prefer
  • Ideal for busy adults, students, families, and frequent travelers
  • May help reduce sensitivity to certain allergens over time in some patients
  • May allow for treatment of multiple allergens in one dose, depending on clinical suitability as these approaches have not been evaluated by the FDA for safety or effectiveness and should be discussed thoroughly with your provider

Results may vary, and outcomes are not guaranteed. Off-label uses of allergy drops are not FDA-approved for these purposes.

What Can Allergy Drops Treat?

Custom-compound allergy drops are sometimes used off-label to address environmental allergens such as pollen, mold, pet dander, and dust mites. However, these uses are not FDA-approved and have not been evaluated for safety and efficacy.

Currently, no allergy drops or shots can treat food allergies.

Are Allergy Drops Safe?

Allergy drops are generally well-tolerated, especially when administered under the supervision of a medical professional. However, mild side effects are still possible, including:

  • Mild itching or irritation in the mouth or throat
  • Temporary increase in allergy symptoms during dose buildup
  • Anaphylaxis, a rare but serious allergic reaction

Although some patients tolerate allergy drops well, these formulations have not been evaluated by the FDA for safety or efficacy.

To ensure your safety, your provider will:

  • Administer the first dose in their office
  • Determine whether you should carry epinephrine during treatment

Explain in full detail what you should expect and review potential risks during the consultation.
